Kyra Manis 10/24/ English 101 Mr. Christiansten Paper Proposal Davenport, Handel, Jay Jay, and Rudick all wrote with the goal of improving the writing of their specific intended audiences; however, the debate between these authors seems to be whether the best option is to treat writing problems as easily and immediately as possible, or if a long term approach should be taken focusing on mental growth and educating the youth. Jay Jay and Davenport’s works seem to be the leaders of each argument, both directly addressing the topic and giving their opinions on the debate. Jay Jay’s article represents the immediate and simple approach to improving writing by giving writers themselves quick and easy ways to improve their writing. On the other hand, Davenport harps on the importance of fixing the problem from the ground up starting with when children first learn the mechanics of writing. Handel and Rudick do not address the debate in as direct ways as the previous authors; however, it appears as though Handel lands more in the quick and easy side of the argument and Rudick with the long term approach. The debate between these authors is centered around a policy argument with authors disagreeing on the best plan forward to improve the writing of the public. Metacognition also plays a huge role in this argument as the ability to control and awareness of one’s thoughts is linked directly to writing ability and productivity. It also has a large impact on my future job career of engineering. It is crucial that engineers can understand and control their thoughts as they are racking their brains for ways to solve the world’s problems. Those who are
actively looking for the best way to improve people’s writing skills or those who study the effectiveness of certain methods would be the particular audience affected by this debate. With reference to the articles written by the authors above, it is likely that the long term approach would be the most effective in accomplishing their shared goal. The long term approach is more efficient in their use of the policy argument stasis as it gives the audience a plan for the future and forward. Specifically, Davenport lays out a specific guide or plan starting all the way down with the education of children to improve their writing skills and inherently, eventually, improve the writing of the public in general. After reading this paper, the reader should be convinced or at least consider that the best plan is to start with at the beginning not patch the holes as they come. As someone who is not the best at writing or the biggest fan of it, like many others, it is important to know which methods are going to be the most effective in helping someone so that they do not waste their time or energy. In order to strengthen my argument, I need to find more information about short term and long term strategies to improve writing. I would also like to find some information from some kind of study about the effectiveness of short and long term solutions. An argument could be made in favor of the short term approach being the best. Those who disagree might claim that a lot of money would be required to make this change to the education system that counties and schools do not have. An argument would also be made in favor of those who have already completed their schooling and still need help improve their writing skills. People might say that we should not just forget about them and focus on the youth when adults today are the ones making changes to the world. However, in terms of the general public and the writing of future generations, the long term approach is likely to be far more effective.
